Introduction and First Day

The Westminster Cathedral RC Primary School has been learning about World War One, more specifically ANZAC Day. On 25 April of this year it will be the 100th anniversary of this historical day, which is an important part of Australia's independence. So far we've learned about two soldiers who are local to this school community. Both soldiers fought at the Battle of Gallipoli, which is commemorated ANZAC Day. Another man that the children have learned about is the Prime Minister of Australia at that time, who was a local boy to Pimlico named Billy Hughes. He emigrated to Australia and rose through the ranks to become one of Australia's most respected Prime Ministers. Today Chris Payne came to talk to the students about his family's old friend, Billy Hughes. The children had the opportunity to ask him questions and even test out their camera skills for a proper interview.
The children in Year 5 have been working in separate groups to create a film that illustrates all that they have learned about this historical event. One group is being trained to work with camera equipment and to interview specialists on the subject, while the other group is learning about the two local soldiers, James Brill and Leonard Keysor. The class will ultimately send this film, along with a descriptive booklet, to their partner school in Australia.
