Billy Hughes (1862-1952) was born at Moreton Place, Pimlico in 1862 to a working class family. When he was 22 years old he managed to travel to Australia to find better work. He found himself mingling with politics and by 1894 he was elected as a Member of the New South Wales State assembly. Soon after he became Prime Minister of Australia in October of 1915. Most importantly, Billy was an attendee of the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919 where he signed the treaty. He continued to remember his roots in Britain while serving as a successful leader of his new country and was a vibrant presence in the Australian government until his death in 1952.
I enjoyed learning about Billy Hughes most because…
“…he was born in Pimlico and was very poor and he still
managed to be the Australian Prime Minister.” –Daniel
“…I liked the stories that you have told us about him and my
favourite was about the locksmith.” –Paola
“…it was really fascinating and it really interests me.”
–Dontae
